Legal Question in Family Law in California

I live in California. My boyfriend and I have broken up after 3 1/2 years and we share two dogs. He wants to split them up and refuses to give them to me. I do not want to split them up and offered to pay him off or we share them. The bill of sale is in his name but I have vets bills solely in mine, and at another vet in both our names. We lived together at the time both dogs were purchase. Can I file a Marvin Claim?

This sounds like a small claims case to get orders on how to divide your pets and not subject to the family law courts since you were not married or in a properly formed domestic partnership.

Marvin claims are for parties who were not married or in a registered domestic partnership, but that had a contract between them as to how property and earnings acquired during their relationship were to be treated.
