Legal Question in Criminal Law in California

petty theft from merchant

I barley turned 18 and they caught me at target stealing. I was and am still scared. They arrested it me and booked me. I want to know what the judge might decide on my case. I know for sure i will never ever get arrested again for anything. And will it affect me in getting a job. Will the employer see it in my record?

Relax..first get a good attorney...sometimes petty theft can be reduced to an infraction...do not just let the judge decide...talk with the public defender if you cannot afford counsel...if you do get convicted of something this is a misdemeanor and you can have it expunged later.

If you are convicted it certainly will be on your record. Best advice- hire an attorney to fight your case. At 18, you dont want to have this type of thing on your record.

Petty theft is not the end of the world, i.e., you should not get any jail time, but you need to fight this charge the best you can. A conviction for theft will greatly diminish your ability to find employment. You need to get a good lawyer to have the case beaten, dismissed through some kind of diversion or at least reduced to an infraction.
