Discrimination?

I work for an office that does not observe Jewish Holidays, however, an employee was allowed to take a paid day off because ''he is Jewish''. I don't feel it is appropriate that one person gets to take a paid day of because he is of a particular religion and the rest of the employees must work because they are not of the same religion or are not active. Is there any case law or code that cites a similar situation. . .just curious. In some strange way I feel I am being discriminated against for not being of the same religion. Thank you!

California law requires employers to accommodate an employee's religious beliefs, if at all possible. Some Jewish holidays, such as the recently passed Yom Kippur, are a very strict and it would be extremely difficult for an employer to not allow someone who adheres to their faith to not permit them to take off, without risking a lawsuit for violation of the Fair Employment and Housing Act.

If you believe this to be unfair, discuss it with your employer. Make some helpful suggestions, such as their offering every employee an equal amount of personal days off, whether for religious or other reasons.
