Termination of employment because of disability

If an employee becomes disabled (either physically or mentally) can his/her company legally terminate his/her employment because of the disability?

Generally speaking the answer is NO. The American with Disabilities Act and various provisions of the Workers Compensation system should provide you a source of protection. However depending upon what you consider a disability and whether it was or is work related may determine your ultimate status. You should check with the Department of Labor for more information, or consult with an attorney who will need much more specific information.
