Legal Question in Administrative Law in California

someone gave me a dog for free and now his mother is says the dog is hers and she will sue me to return the dog of pay her an amount of money. She says her son didn't mean to give to me, that it was just to pet sit. Can she sue me if we never spoke to each other before? if so, how can I defend myself. Him and I never spoke of pet sitting fees, or temporary arrangements. Also the dog was malnourished, severely scared of humans and his nails were so long that were hurting his toes.
