Legal Question in Administrative Law in California

Hiring a lawyer

My 17 year old son was arrested for possession with intent to sell, as well as transporting a little more than an ounce of marijuana.

I want the best representation for my son, but what determines the best? The state appointed attorney is $425 and has said he has lots of experience with these sorts of cases.Other lawyers are ranging from $3,000 - $5,000. I don't want to play legal roulette with my son's life, but I really do not know what criteria I should be following to hire the best lawyer. Can you please send me some guidelines?

Thankyou.

Re: Hiring a lawyer

This question boils down to how much money do you have?

The Public Defenders I know are great, knowledgable attorneys. If you're budget is limited, then it's a fine choice.

However, if you have the money, I think an attorney in private practice would be best. The first choice for me would be a former prosecutor who is now doing criminal defense privately. Second, I'd look for a former PD. Make sure either has long years of experience, and be sure to interview as many as you can. Most will give you a free consultation. Compare what they say as to strategy and outcome.

Good luck.
