After you have done a little background reading, you might consider sitting in on some sessions in a courtroom. There is no admission charge, just go sit in the back and observe. It may be confusing at first, and a lot of it may seem terribly dull, but eventually you'll hear some interesting interaction between the attorneys and the judge. In addition to trials, you should consider listening to "law and motion" calendars, which are sort of mini-trials on limited issues raised by a motion or demurrer, and are over much more quickly. At trials, you'll be able to observe witnesses testifying and sometimes juries. Just remember, your right to be present in a courtroom carries with it a responsibility to be quiet and unobtrusive.
