Maybe you can't. Federal litigation is expensive, and if you already lost at the trial level, then it can be risky as well.

That said, if you want to try to find someone who will take on a pro bono case, look for large law firms that have expertise in the subject matter of your litigation. Some large law firms even assign specific attorneys to handle pro bono cases, and you might be able to find mention of such a program on the firm's web site.

If you are indigent and this is a criminal case an attorney will be appointed to represent you at no charge. You shouldn't need to look for a pro bono attorney.

If this is a civil case, you may want to start with the clerk's office at the Court of Appeal. In the Ninth Circuit (which covers California and many other western states as well as the Pacific territories), the clerks maintain a list of cases worthy of pro bono assistance and actively try to match those cases with willing attorneys. Most cases won't qualify, but if yours does this will be a good way to get the help you need.

Keep in mind that lawyers don't agree to work pro bono just because the client can't afford to pay. Most will only volunteer if they believe their work will help correct a serious injustice or will be important to the development of the law. If the decision of the district court appears to be correct you might not be able to find anyone who will handle your appeal for free.
