What can happen to me? Will I go to jail or will I just be forced to make restitution (or both)?

Re: grand theft
Remember it is up to the prosecution to prove you guilty. While any felony carries the risk of state prison time, the most significant result of a felony conviction is you won't be able to get a job, ever. It is also possible you could be charged with burglary or robbery, which increases the risk of a state prison sentence upon conviction.
Borrow the money from your relatives; and hire a lawyer in time for the lawyer to be present at your first court hearing.
