Legal Question in Banking Law in California
Victim of Check Fraud
My granddaughter was entering her bank when approached by a woman requesting her to cash a check for her with some silly reason why she couldn't do it herself. My granddaugher was trusting and naive and feeling sorry for the story the woman presented. The check was for $950.00. My granddaughter only had $23.00 in her account at the time, however, the bank cashed it for her. The woman of course was a crook, and the check was no good. The bank has now turned it over to a collection agency. The police were notified, filed a report, and apparently this woman has done this before, and their aware of her. My granddaughter is a student, unemployed, has no way to pay this money. Can they legally continue to harrass her with daily phone calls demanding the money she does not have? Thank you....

Re: Victim of Check Fraud
Maybe she can get a part time job and start making payments on her debt.
