Legal Question in Bankruptcy in California

Can't afford Bankruptcy Attorney

I had money taken from my account from a credit card company. I filed an exemption and some of the money was returned. The bank took over 600 in fees because it made me overdrawn when they took out the money. I have called legal aid and now my car was hit by an uninsured person and I have no car. I have to go back to court in 2 weeks, and I have no money to pay for an Attorney. All the ads I read and call want 700 I don't have that kind of money. My divorce was real bad, and my credit is too because of it. I tried to even do the papewrwork myself, but this is out of my expertise, can someone help??? I have tried legal aid. and the Legal Network, but I can't afford it. If I need to file Bankrupcy, how can I afford 700 for an Attorney?

I do sympathize with your plight--I know some Legal Aid offices can help with bankruptcy, or Bet Tzedek (in the Los Angeles area), but you can also use a good self-help book to complete your petition and file it yourself. Also, many law offices will take monthly payments and file your petition when you've paid in full.

You might look under "Nolo Press" in a Web search engine for do-it-yourself help. I hate to say it, but many people do their own bankruptcies. I can't comment on how they fare, though. If things are complicated, like your car situation and a lawsuit against you, etc., it might be worth getting legal advice. You might also look into the Legal Grind, a legal advice coffeehouse in Santa Monica and, I think, in the Valley somewhere. Good luck to you.
