Legal Question in Bankruptcy in California

Bankruptcy Cost?

I really need to file bankruptcy but don't know enough to do the filing myself. A local attorney wants to charge $1000.00 which I just do not have. Where can I find affordable help? After all, I am in financial crisis, hence the need for the bankruptcy!

Bankruptcy Cost

Well, unfortunately, $1,000.00 is not at all unreasonable for an attorneys fee on a Chapter 7. Does that include the filing fee? If it is a simple, uncomplicated filing, I could probably do it for $1,000.00 total, including the filing fee, maybe a little less. Your inability to come up with that much money seems to indicate a larger problem that maybe the bankruptcy won't fix. In other words, if your debt is mostly credit card-type debt, and after you stop making payments on those you still cannot save up money, then you are still going to be having problems even after you get discharged from those debts in bankruptcy. Without knowing more about your personal circumstances, I cannot really advise you on how to proceed. I would be happy, however, to give you a free phone consultation if you live in the greater Los Angeles area or live in Northern California.
