Fees vary. In Los Angeles, for instance, you can find advertisements in some of the free weekly newspapers for as low as $199 and some lawyers I know of charge over $2100 for a simple Chapter 7. I've seen similar advertisements in San Francisco for some pretty low rates, too. Sometimes lawyers will utilize a sliding scale fee structure -- something like the first 5 creditors are covered by the fee, any additional creditor is another $50. So it is wise to keep your ears and eyes open before you sign up with a lawyer, and ask if there are any "extras" that cause additional fees. Also, never sign a bankruptcy document before it is completely filled in.
