Legal Question in Bankruptcy in California

BK filings and dismissal

Hi,

Other than going to the county recorder's office and sifting through mounds of filings, where can I find a list of BK filings and also BK dismissals?

I am in Contra Costa county in CA. The legal newspaper, The News Register, used to include this information in their newspaper, but they don't anymore.

Help! Thanks.

Pat

Re: BK filings and dismissal

I'm work in the Central and Southern Districts of California, and you are in the Northern District so my answer may not be right for the Bankruptcy Courts up there. First, bankruptcy recordings are not found in the County Recorder's office - the County of Contra Costa has nothing to do with bankruptcy. Bankruptcy is a Federal law and administered exclusively by the Federal Bankruptcy Courts. The Court covering Contra Costa county is the Oakland Division of the Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of California. Their website is www.canb.uscourts.gov. All bankruptcy courts have electronic access to records, but there are fees associated with using that service. You could do a daily search on the system for bankruptcies filed the day before. I'm not sure if this is the case any longer now that electronic filing of bankruptcy petitions is commonplace, but it used to be that when filing a consumer case you had to provide a "press copy" which were accumulated in one place in the Bankruptcy Clerk's office for the public to review. Check the Oakland Division clerk's office to see if that still happens. Finally, there must be mailing lists you can buy that aggregate this information. I know that they do this for lawsuits filed, etc... search online for a service of this type.
