Legal Question in Bankruptcy in California
California chapter 7 bankruptcy
I had filed a chapter 7 bankruptcy that was discharged on 9/1/2002. I was told that I had made the cut off date of having my bankcruptcy on my credit report of only 7 yrs after which it would go to 10 yrs if it had discharged on a later date. Is this statement true? Do I have to wait 7 yrs or 10 yrs for it to be removed for my credit report?

The law used to be 7 years, now it is ten from the date of discharge.

For as long as I can remember, the Fair Credit Reporting Act has allowed bankrutpcies to remain on your credit report for up to 10 years. Whoever gave you the information about 7 years was incorrect.
