Legal Question in Bankruptcy in California

Filing Chapter 7

Can I file bankruptcy without the help of an attorney or paralegal? How long does it take for the bankruptcy to be offical? Also, when you go to court, what information do you have to have with you?

People have been known to do so, although depending on your financial circumstances, it might not be the most appropriate way to proceed.

Once you file the bankruptcy, it becomes official. The process usually takes about 3-4 months and collection activities will stop shortly after the bankruptcy is filed.

A debtor does not usually "go to court." He or she will go to a creditors' meeting at an office building in about one month after the case is opened. You will have to bring with you your driver's license (or other official photo ID) and your original social security card. In some districts, there are other requirements which, if you serve as your own attorney, you might be able to determine by visiting the court's web site or calling or visiting the clerk.
