Garnishment of Wages

Can a creditor contact my employer directly to initiate garnishment of wages? Or does it have to go through the courts? Must I receive written notice before wages can be garnished?

The notice of levy must be served by the marshal, sheriff, or a registered process server. It is required that you are sent notice because you might apply for exemptions for various reasons.
