I live in California. If chapter 13 is filed, and I inherit appox. $70,000.00 from the death of a parent, is there anything to do to protect that money from being taken away? (

Where are you in the process (just filed or plan approved or where)? Your options depend on all the circumstances. Have a private consultation with an attorney without delay.

Everything is in the timing. You need to sit down and brainstorm with a BK lawyer in your locality.

If your benefactor dies within six months of filing your BK, you will have to modify your plan to increase the monthly payments to pay 70,000 or your total unsecured debt, whichever is LESS, over the remaining years in your Plan (which you can extend to five years if you wish).
