Legal Question in Bankruptcy in California

Can non-spouses discharge one anothers debts

My roomate and I owned several pet jointly. Oour veterinarian knew us personally and was well aware that the pets were "ours". In 1997 I took one of the pets to the Vet. We ended up in a dispute about the bill. I wrote the vet many times in an effort to resolve it without success. My roomate finally included the debt in her bankruptcy.

Now the Vet has turned me over to a collection agency. They say that because I wrote several letters acknowleging the debt while trying to resolve the dispute, it is my bill and cannot be discharged on my roomates bankruptcy (which by the way has been discharged).

Is this legal?

Re: Can non-spouses discharge one anothers debts

If your question is whether your debt was discharged by your roommate's bankruptcy, the answer is "no". If your question is whether or not you ever had a debt to the Vet, that is a non-bankruptcy question and the answer will depend on state law and what documents there are making you liable, etc.
