Legal Question in Bankruptcy in California

Post divorce credit responsibility

After a divorce and formal court property/debt proceeding, my friend is being dunned by ex-wife's creditors for purchases made well after formal dissolution proceeding. Property settlement and respective debt assignments were made by a judge. How does he deal with her current creditors? Separate residences, income tax returns, etc for

4 years- current credit debt stems from purchases made 2 years after formal proceedings. Hos does my friend extricate himself?

Re: Post divorce credit responsibility

Your caption says "post divorce credit responsibility." I take it that the debts were incurred after the divorce decree was issued. If so, they are not your friend's debts. He should dispute the debts with the credit reporting agencies (Experian, Equifax, and Trans-Union), and also telephone each creditor, get their fax numbers, and send them a copy of the divorce decree. If they still insist on impairing his credit, he might have to resort to legal action. However, one step at a time is wise.
