how do I recover money paid to a company that filed for bankruptcy

You need to get a Proof of Claim form from the bankruptcy court, fill it out and file it with the clerk attaching documentation of the claim. Please be aware that most people and companies that file bankruptcy can't pay their debts and those filing claims end up receiving nothing or a small portion of what they are owed.
