Legal Question in Bankruptcy in California

removing bankruptcy from my credit rating

I filed bankruptcy in 1993. It was my understanding that the law at the time stated it would be removed in 7 years. Now I'm hearing the new law says 10 years. I thought laws could not be retroactive. When can I begin removing this from my credit history and if it is 7 years, what do I need to do to remove the record from my credite history?

Re: removing bankruptcy from my credit rating

bankruptcies can be reported for up to 10 years on a credit report. That is not a bankruptcy law, it's federal credit reporting law, so the illusion that it is retroactive is just that: an illusion. It applies from the date the law was signed and any bankruptcies that were filed prior to and after are affected.
