Legal Question in Bankruptcy in California

removing a bankruptsy from my credit report

i filed chapter 7 bankruptsy in 1995. the law at the time stated it was to remain on my credit report for 7 years. now the credit bureaus say that the law has been changed to now report bankruptsies for 10 years. since i filed my bankruptsy before the law was changed, don't the credit bureaus have to honor the law that was in place when i filed and remove it from my record after 7 years?

Re: removing a bankruptsy from my credit report

This issue keeps coming up all the time! There was NEVER a law saying that bankruptcy need only stay on one's credit report for seven years! TEN years has been the credit reporting period for as long as I've been practicing (20 years). I don't know where this "rumor" keeps originating from; perhaps you are confusing it with judgment liens, which show up for only 7 years.
