Legal Question in Bankruptcy in California
unique question
I received a computer business certificate and a student loan in 1991. The computer business training I received is now basically obsolete, and I was never able to attain employment with the skills I learned. Now the school I attended is not accredited like community college or state college, so these courses I took are irrelevant to there system. Since 1991 I have had spells of unemployment and presently am unemployed. Can my student be discharged or lessened?

Re: unique question
A student loan can be dischargeable in a bankruptcy if you can convince a bankruptcy judge that it would be an undue hardship on you or your dependents to be required to repay the loan.
Re: unique question
Very possibly. Check out http://www.ed.gov/offices/OSFAP/DCS/loan.cancellation.discharge.html for possible options.
Re: unique question
The facts you describe provide no basis for being released from responsibility for your student loan. There is never a guarantee that you will find employment, and/or that you will not be required to keep abreast of new developments in your chosen educational pursuit. That said, the lender may work with you in restructuring your loan.
