Legal Question in Business Law in California

501(c)4 or 7?

I am on the board of a group about to get official tax status. We are trying to decide between 501(c)4 and 501(c)7 status and understand the basic differences. Many other orgs similar to ours appear to be 501(c)4 though they are not really ''social welfare'' orgs. Is there a benefit to either?
