Legal Question in Business Law in California
Accountant then, now or forever?
My accountant sold his business in 2000. I receive a notice from the state of underpayment for the tax year 1998. Who is responsible for action on my files? The new business owners who now hold my 10 years worth of files? Or the accountant who prepared the forms in 1998?

Re: Accountant then, now or forever?
You are responsible for paying your taxes. If the former accountant was negligent and his malpractice caused you harm, either he or the new business may be liable depending on how the sale of the accounting practice was structured. Please consult an attorney promptly because there are deadlines (statutes of limitation) which must be met to sue.
