If I become an attorney and pass the bar do I need to be an active attorney and find work right away? Or can I be active but take on work or cases whenever I wish?

No. You can elect to work full-time in law, part-time in law, or to pursue a career having nothing to do with law, and you can jump back and forth. You need to learn about the dues and the minimum continuing legal education requirements associated with these choices. Also, if you have any intention of building a serious career in law, either running your own practice or as an associate/partner in a firm, you'll find that loyalty and commitment are necessary to a truly successful career.
