You can't defraud people by falsely saying or implying that the money you receive will go to a charitable or other nonprofit entity. That would be against the law.

Sure, provided you don't break any laws.
The most obvious potentials here for breaking laws would include any misrepresentation as to the ultimate use of funds raised; any lottery or other gaming activity; and any suggestion of tax-deductibility.
I constantly engage in a form of "fund raising" for myself by offering to perform legal services for a fee. I see no reason why you can't was cars for a fee. You may need a business license.
