what exactly constitutes service of summons for lawsuit!

Does someone from the court have to physically come to you home or businessand announce you are served by handing me or someoneelso who is there paperwork??

or just sending a certified letter that must be signed???

or just leaving lawsuit paperwork at the front door?

when does the time start ticking?

from the date on the summons or from the date the servers says he served me?
