Legal Question in Business Law in California

Contracts in california. My consulting company provides training and placement help. As per the owner the training is free. But he sends me a contract paper which clearly says I need to pay them money before the training starts. When talking to him regarding this he says contracts are not legally bound in California and he is doing it just to keep people from not working with his company after getting the training. My question is do I sign it or not?

Contract law works more or less the same way in California as in other states. The details may differ from one state to the next, but anyone who tells you California doesn't recognize contracts at all either doesn't know what he's talking about or hopes that you are easily fooled.

You should review the proposed contract with a lawyer if at all possible. It may or may not be legally binding based on what it says, but the idea that no contract is ever binding in this state is quite false.
