Can I copy descriptions from the dictionary to a book I am writing

Generally, dictionary definitions can be quoted provided you give proper attribution to the dictionary you take them from. You should cite the name and edition number of the dictionary next to the definition. This assumes you are using only a few definitions and not creating your own lexicon.
