Legal Question in Business Law in California

Employer goes ballastic, possible slander, harassment, breech of privacy

After resigning a job, my former boss used my personal references from the interview to call my references and attempt to discredit/slander me. When asked to stop she refused and only quit when one of my references threatened to hire a lawyer.

Question: Is this a breech of privacy, harassment, slander or all of the above? Do I have a valid case?

It could be any or all of these three torts, but whether it is will depend upon several factors, including what she said and to whom. Without more information there is no way to say for sure.

Re: Employer goes ballastic, possible slander, harassment, breech of privacy

It could be slander if anyone believed her and acted upon such information. If you were denied a job or suffered injury because of it -- including emotional distress -- it might be actionable. It might be an invasion of privacy if she imparted private information to others.

Re: Employer goes ballastic, possible slander, harassment, breech of privacy

It's very likely one or another and quite possibly all three. Slander would depend upon falsity of something said and actual injury to you. Whether you have a "valid" case may depend less upon whether you would win and more upon whether you can prove damages. Being slandered, harassed or privacy-invaded is one thing, having compensable damage is another.
