Legal Question in Business Law in California

ethnocentric service

I am wondering if it is legal to run an internet dating service which registers only users of asian background. It is designed to help minorities find each other in the USA. I don't want to incur a lawsuit by a person wishing to use my service who is not asian.

Thanks alot.

Re: ethnocentric service

In general the anti-discrimination laws affect only beneficiaries of government action or areas of strong public policy such as housing. Therefore, unless you need a license that is not freely granted (such as a liquor license rather than an ordinary business license) or are using a government subsidy (such as getting an SBA loan) you are probably OK.

Your proposed business sounds like one that may have other legal liabilities to consider, however (such as safety of members who meet one another), and my recommendation would be to have a business lawyer give your entire business plan a quick review to spot areas where trouble may arise. Such a review could include whether any of the state or federal civil-rights laws are offended. I don't think so, but only someone who has looked over your entire business plan and method of operation could give you a 100% clearance.
