Legal Question in Business Law in California

I have a food trailer and i let my uncle use it. The rented a space in someone's parking lot and did not pay rent. Now he has a past due rent bill for $8000.00. They are telling me that I can assume his debt or they can keep my trailer. The trailer is not in my uncle's name so can they hold my property as collateral. Please let me know.

Unless you signed something giving them a security interest in your trailer, and the right to hold it until the rent was paid, without going to Court they can't just seize your trailer or use "self help" to collect what is due from your Uncle. If they won't let you take the trailer off of their parking lot, you should consider filing a police report. What does your Uncle say about all of this?
