Legal Question in Business Law in California
I have several gift cards to a particular store with balances of $10 each. I am ultimately going to redeem these cards for cash once the balance on each drops to $9.99 or less (per the California gift card cash-back statue). The least expensive item in the store is soda for about $1.50.
The company explained that I'm required to purchase an item that they sell with each card, prior to the card being eligible for cash redemption.
If the store's register permits applying any amount from my gift card towards the amount owed to purchase the product (to bring the balance below $10),can the store require I apply all available monies on the gift card to complete the transaction?
I want to apply $0.01 vs. the $1.50 soda cost.

Get a life. Not to mention a clue. You want to spend $0.01 off the card instead of $1.50, but then what? How are you going to pay the other $1.49? You want to pay $1.49 in cash or on a credit card to get $1.49 more cash back when you redeem the card? Go find your elementary school teacher and tell them they should have flunked you in math.
