Legal Question in Business Law in California

Hello...I work in a small business general merchandise store. There is a hand written sign at the end of the counter instructing customers to leave their bags behind the counter. The other day, a woman and her son came in. He left his bag just underneath the sign and not behind the counter. It was stolen. A police report was made and we investigated the security camera. We could not determine who had stolen the bag. Now the woman wants compensation. She wants a new bag, replaces money that was in the bag, an ipod that was in the bag, a little boy's jacket, and other items that were all in the bag. We have offered her a store gift certificate, but she clearly wants compensation for a bag and the items in the bag. What should I do?

I would say the store has no responsibility for the customers' loss, and the request for compensation should be politely but firmly declined.
