Legal Question in Business Law in California
Is it illegal to charge two different prices to end consumers based on income? If so, how is age based price discrimination different (senior discounts etc)?
1 Answer from Attorneys
In general, a private business is free to charge anything they want. The only limitation in this regard that comes to mind is regards to truth in advertising, which is an FTC issue. So companies cannot advertise a product at one price and then play monkey business once you get into the store. But in general, if a business wants to offer a discount to someone because of income concerns, or because that person is a veteran, or just because they feel like closing a deal, they can do that.
Kind regards,
Frank
