independent contractor

one interpreter worked for me, never sent the invoice to get paid every month, now she wants me to pay all at once few thousand of $.She took stoll my account.I paid 50% already to want she billing for.Now I dont have the business because of her plus $6,000 she say I owe her.What can i do?

If you agree you owe the money -- despite your inability to pay -- you should pay. (If the debt is over 2 years old, the statute of limitation might have run.) Try to make arrangements with the interpreter to make monthly payments. If you dispute the amount, try to work it out. Otherwise, the interpreter's likely to file a small claims action and try to obtain a judgment.

If this interpreter was working for your business, and used her position to gain access to your client list, and then went into competition with you by contacting your clients and using information she obtained from you to started, this is illegal under the unfair competition laws of the Business and Professions Code (starting with section 17200) and the Uniform Trade Secrets Act (Civil Code sections 3426 to 3426.11). See a local lawyer.
