Any dispute over money can be taken to small claims, but there is a limit to the amount of money that the judge can order the Defendant to pay. In California, if a claimant has not filed any small claims suits before, he or she may ask for up to $7,500.
If you are seeking something other than money, then you may or may not be able to get relief, depending upon what you are seeking and what judge you draw.
If you would like help with a specific small claims matter, I have some experience as I have advised clients with small claims matters and I have used the process myself. It is relatively easy, but there are some things you can do to increase the odds that the judge agrees with you instead of your opponent.
Also, keep in mind that the suing party cannot appeal an adverse small claims judgment, but a Defendant can. If the Defendant appeals, then the case is heard all over again by a different judge, and attorneys can appear on behalf of the parties.
