Legal Question in Business Law in California

The manager at the Domino's Pizza in Granite Bay, CA hired me. We filled out paperwork on March 1. He told me to expect a start date in early March. March 15 rolls around and the background check was still not complete. I went to speak with the district manager the next day. He told me he would speed up the background check process and it would be completed by the following Friday. It was completed. He told me he would put me on stand-by and he did.

When he told me he would put me on stand-by, that meant that if a delivery driver spot opened up at any one of the 5 local stores, I'd get the job. Well, the general manager at the Granite Bay store hired someone else last week and never even contacted me. So the district manager also strung me along as it appears. I called him today. He continued to lie. He said that his definition of stand-by was that I would simply be placed on a hiring list and he said that he never promised me a job. That's not at all what he said before as you can see.
