Re: occupation

If by "occupation" you mean a person's trade or vocation, you can safely go with Mr. Cohen's citation from Black's. Neither cases nor statutues in California seem to provide anything more specific. The closest thing might be the occupational categories used in workers' comp. for determining insurance ratings.

Of course, "occupation" is used in at least two other senses in the law. For example, the postwar military occupation of a country, and the possession of real property by a person such as a tenant, owner or trespasser.

Cannot speak for states other than California, but many or most state courts would probably go by either the Webster's or the Black's definitions.

Re: occupation

Black's Law Dictionary -- the legal authority -- defines "occupation" as "[T]hat which principally takes up one's time, thought, and energies, especially, one's regular business or employment; also, whatever one follows as the means of making a livelihood. Particular business, profession, trade, or calling which engages individual's time and efforts; employment in which one regularly engages or vocation of his [or her] life."
