Re: getting paid
If the magazine has filed bankruptcy, you cannot pursue your claim directly against the magazine; instead, you must present a claim in the proper format to the bankruptcy court, and hope that there will be some money to pay unsecured creditors. Step #1 is to verify that it has filed and is entitled to protection from creditors under the Bankruptcy Act. Try to obtain this information through the clerk of the U.S. (Federal) Bankruptcy Court in Houston or wherever the magazine is likely to have filed.
Re: getting paid
If the magazine is not bankrupt, then, you can sue them directly in Los Angeles for Breach of Contract (oral or written contract). Also, you should consider suing the owners directly or the people for whom the services were provided. Meaning the actual people. I would be willing to discuss this in further detail. Please contact me directly.
