Re: Pantent
My understanding is that while ordinary lawyers and even parties acting pro se can handle litigation, etc. involving patent issues, that an original patent application must be prepared and presented by someone who is not only a lawyer but also who has passed a special examination on patent law and has been admitted to the "patent bar." You can probablt confirm this with a Google search or maybe another LawGuru attorney will provide an answer.
Re: Pantent
You are allowed to apply for a patent without a lawyer, but you will probably make serious and costly mistakes. The patent process is very technical and even most lawyers wouldn't be able to do it correctly. Patent lawyers have highly specialized knowledge about the process, and most also have degrees in technical fields so they can better understand their clients' inventions and figure out how best to draft the patent application. You should hire such a lawyer if at all possible.
Re: Pantent
Each patent application is different, so I would doubt papers found on the Internet that are general in nature or relate specifically to some other patent, are going to be very helpful. It's it's worth patenting, I would recommend hiring a patent attorney (most lawyers, including myself, do not pratice patent law). You may also want to look into a provisional patent, to see if that may be an affordable solution for the time-being.
