Paranthetical Number in Contracts

Why do contracts often include a written number and then the number in parenthesis? For example, ''no later than thirty (30) days.''

If the contract included only numbers, it is more easily altered than if it is words and numbers.

I agree with the three previous answers. One point worth adding is that this format is not legally required and not all lawyers use it. Not being written this way has no effect on a contract's validity.
