Legal Question in Business Law in California

Patents and copying internationally

I have been looking at importing goods from the U.S. California into Australia.

These goods have a U.S. Patent but not trademarked.

They are very impressive and would do well in our market, however, the plight of the Aussie dollar of late prohibits any profits being made.

I have been thinking of manufacturing the goods locally, as they are steel and relatively simple to make.

Am I to be held responsible to the original manufacturer? as they do not have any presence in my country and were never going to be, being a small firm.

I have imported a few of the units for evaluation purposes but have not entered into any agreements nor have any papers been signed.

Would copying the evaluation units that I already own and manufacturing them locally break any patent laws?

Thankyou for your assistance.

Re: Patents and copying internationally

Yes, there are international treaties covring Patents. you would be better off entering into an agreement with them first.
