Legal Question in Business Law in California

Phone number

There are 5 partners in a co-op. One of these partners is moving on to her own business. She started using a phone number 10 years ago and wants to take it with her. Although, two other partners have used the number for 8 years. Does she have any legal grounds for keeping phone number when 4 of us are staying with the co-op. Should we be concerned about lawyer involvment on her part because there is value in the large customer base of this number. Thank you.

Re: Phone number

You may be right, and that phone number may be worth measurable money, in significant amounts. I would have to look at the nature of your relationship and agreements, and you may be right, the number may be the property of the partnership. In this case, you would need to dissolve the partnership, and attach a fair value to the phone number. There are other legal aspects to dissolving a partnership also, such as making sure you do not face continued liability. Please feel free to contact my office.

Best,
