can you play cards in a bar in the state of california

As long as there is no illegal gambling I do not think there should be a problem. Perhaps another attorney may have a different opinion.

I don't really have a different opinion; I'd just add that the bar management can set a policy that there be no card playing.

As a Franchise Attorney I can only add the following that has not been addressed. It depends on how "you" is defined. Minors obviously can't play cards in a bar, for example. It would also depend on how "play cards" is defined. Consult with a good business or franchise attorney in your area for specific advice.
