Legal Question in Business Law in California

Pledge

I'm trying to make a contract with my mom. Actually more of a pledge to prove that I'm serious about being a responsible pet owner. Is it aggainst the law for a teen to make a contract? What kind of contract could I use?

Re: Pledge

A contract by a minor is voidable, but that's probably beside the point here. A contract is basically a promise that is enforceable. If you respect your mother, you will abide by your agreement because of love and respect, not because your mother could take you to court. What you're talking about is a written promise possibly with an agreement regarding the consequences of breaking your promises. That means that if you promise to feed the cat and you don't and the contract says Mom can then take it to the cat shelter, you can't get mad at her for simply living up to what you both agreed to do. The contract serves as a reminder of your agreement. The important issue for you is that if you break your promises, you will tarnish your reputation and trustworthiness with your mother. The Bible says a good name is very valuable and losing it is much worse than any punishment by a court. Happy pet ownership!
