Legal Question in Business Law in California

I received a phone call from a contractor which hired me as an electrical subcontractor to help finish a project that he needed to finish but he was not able to finish with his people. The project consisted of wiring five conveyor lanes aprox 180 ft long, with a total of 6 motors, 10 control stations(start/stop), 9 pull cords, and one photo-electric sensor.

When I checked the wiring that was done to that point and I realize that I would need to rewire the whole system to make sure it was done right and it would work reliably since after taking resposability for the project I would be hold resposable for its operation. We call the contractor to asking if that was ok with him for us to proceed, he said yes. So we work Friday, Saturday, and we were ready to comeback Sunday to finish but he (contractor) tell his employee to tell us to don't work Sunday but finish on Monday. So we came back Monday and work but we could not finish until tuesday late at night. The system has been running and the customer is happy with our work.

When we send him the bill he complain why it was so much money. We explain the materials we bought and the hours we work on the project but he was not happy.

We tell him that we need it to know when we should expect payment.

We try to call him on the phone to set a meeting to clear the fair price for the work done.

But now he is not picking his phone up. What is the legal way to proceed to get pay and don't spend more money than the amount is owed. The amount we calculated is owe is 17,400 dolars

We work 170hrs plus aprox 3500 dls in materials

Talk to a competent attorney in you area immediately about recording a mechanic's lien and filing an action for foreclose. You may also have other remedies. Don't handle it yourself as there are tricky laws to follow.
