Legal Question in Business Law in California

I recently was fined for running my laptop repair business out of my garage. I was told that I had to shut down my business by code enforcement Once this happened, I went and obtained a business license. I then received another fine and code enforcement about a month afterward. The code enforcement person again said I could not run the business from my home. I am not sure what I can do or how this is possible. There is no noise being made and I have repaired a large number of my neighbors computers. I am not sure what the deal is here or if there is any legal ground for me to stand on.

Well, first of all, having a business license is not permission to operate the business in violation of zoning laws. There very well may be a process by which you can get a variance from the particular zoning restriction to operate your business at home, but this will ultimately depend upon local law and policy. Ask the zoning authorities whether your use is absolutely prohibited in your zone, or if a variance can be applied for. Maybe you'll need a local lawyer to assist you in applying.
